Betty Weston, age 88, of Elburn, passed away quietly into the arms of her savior, surrounded by the love and prayers of her family, Wednesday, February 24, 2016, at Oak Crest Retirement Center, where she had made her home in recent years.
She was born December 26, 1927, in Carpenter, SD, the daughter of Rudolph and Louise (Thompson) Iverson.
Betty was only a year old when her father, a farmer, moved from South Dakota to IA. Betty was eight years old before the family moved once again, this time the family made their home her mother’s parents in Hampshire.
Betty moved once more to Elburn where she graduated from Elburn High School in 1945 but not before making a name for herself on the hardwood.
Betty was tending tables at Carlsons when a man in uniform caught her attention. For Elewyn “Mert” Weston, gone were the battles for his country, but also his heart. After courting a few years, they wanted to have a big wedding but because of scant resources, eloped instead, marrying on November 10, 1947.
They lived with Mert’s family for a few years before buying “the little schoolhouse”. Ten years and a lot of saving later, they built a home around the school house, incorporating not only the physical structure but also all the love and memories that were shared as well. Betty and Mert loved spending time together, but unfortunately all good things come to an end. Mert passed away in 1999 but not before they were able to travel the world from Canada, Scandinavia, Germany, France, and Africa, not to mention basketball games and fishing holes near home.
Betty met a lot of people working for the Elburn Packing Plant for over 38 years. The office was kept more than busy when over 400 cattle going through the doors each day. During her high school years, Betty worked at Carlson’s Confectionary.
Betty was a proud charter member of the Elburn American Legion Women’s Auxiliary and the Women’s Fellowship at Congregational Church in Elburn.
Betty’s warm and open smile was like sunshine. She gave it as freely as she did her friendship and both were treasured gifts gratefully received. Betty was a fan of all the Chicago teams, but the Bulls were number one in her heart. In the kitchen, a first place ribbon was always reserved for her favorite chocolate sheet cake. She loved movies, especially High Noon, and was an avid reader—as long as there was no violence! Christmas was the time of year where there was an extra twinkle in Betty’s eyes as she remembers all the celebrations with family over the years. Betty was truly a gift to her community
