Betty Williams

She was born in Aurora, IL, on November 30, 1925, to proud parents, Julius and Emma (Johnson) Holmberg. Betty grew up and spent her entire life in Elburn, IL. She attended local schools and graduated from Elburn High School with the class of 1943. Not only did she receive a diploma, she got Dick Williams heart as well. As it turned out, his country called him into service before they could get married, but on his return to civilian life, Dick and Betty got married on V-J Day, August 8, 1945 in Batavia, IL. They began their new life together in the midst of a national celebration, but as life settled down, Dick and Betty did too, making a home in Aurora for a time before moving to rural Elburn on Hughes Rd. after their son Gary was born. They lived with Betty’s father following her mother’s passing but when her father passed in 1987, they made the big move, a whole quarter of a mile, to their present home. She stayed true to her roots even after Dick’s passing in 2011, managing to live on her beloved Hughes Rd. her entire life. Betty kept herself busy working as a secretary at Farm Service or F.S. in Elburn for over twenty-five years. No one kept a tighter ship or had a sweeter smile than Betty. Betty was a member of the Quivera Club and never missed a chance to “play dominos, eat, drink and tell lies” in Kaneville. She was no stranger to the golf course either. You could find her on the golf course on any given day, enjoying the fresh air, sunshine and the company of friends. Betty was masterful in the kitchen. Mouthwatering smells were commonplace, instantly making your stomach grumble when you walked into her house. She was especially famous for her Christmas cookies that you’d swear came straight from the bakery. Each one was made with double helpings of love and heaping share of sunshine in every bite. It won’t just be the cookies that family and friend will miss. Betty’s heart was always open to love and her memories will remain as her legacy. She is survived by her loving son, Gary (June) Williams; five grandchildren: Karen (Gordon) Stephan, Christy Blackburn, Samantha Williams, Randy Williams and Jayme Williams; nine great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews and a community who will fondly remember her. She is preceded in death by her parents, Julius and Emma Holmberg; her husband Richard “Dick” Williams; one sister, Evelyn Swanson; two brothers: Kenneth and Donald Holmberg and one granddaughter, Kim Paulen. Visitation will be from 12-2 p.m., with a memorial service to celebrate her life to follow at 2 p.m., Friday, January 26th, 2018, at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn, IL 60119.
