Catherine "Katie" H. Schramer, age 85, of Virgil, IL, passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Wednesday, January 26, 2011 at the Provena Geneva Care Center where she had recently become a resident. A woman of faith, Katie left her earthly home to claim her Savior’s promise of a home with Him. She was born September 18, 1925, in Virgil Twp., the daughter of Nicholas J. and Katherine Theresa (Theis) Schramer. She attended S.S. Peter and Paul School almost across the street from her home through the eighth grade when she was needed at home on the farm. During WW II Katie was employed at Burgess Norton in Geneva, from 1942-1945. Then for a time, she was employed at Howell’s in St. Charles before going to work at DuKane where she retired after 39 years in 1991. Katie was an avid gardener who took the bounty of her garden into the kitchen where she made soup (for which she was famous), canned a variety of things and was known to be a wonderful baker. Her 48 x 84 table was often filled with baked goods of all kinds, especially rolls, coffee cakes and cookies. She was a regular worker at the church fish frys, worked at many funeral lunches where she provided ten pounds of German potato salad and in later years helped at the food pantry. Katie was an old time cook who didn’t need a recipe; she had just the right touch to make things delicious.Katie’s life was centered around family and faith. She came from a family of ten children and though she did not have children of her own she was loved by a host of nieces and nephews and their families. There will be countless stories and memories shared in the years to come as the family gathers around their kitchen tables. She was a lifetime member of S.S. Peter & Paul Church, Virgil where she and her sister, Barbara, cared for the altar clothes for many years. She was a member of the Altar & Rosary Society and the Friday night prayer group which faithfully came to pray with her when her health began to fail. She is survived by her three sisters: Marion Umbdenstock of Bartlett, Clara Schmitt of Maple Park and Angela Lexa of Sycamore; one brother, Joseph (Mary Ann) Schramer of Apple Valley, MN; many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews as well as a lifetime of friends. She is preceded in death by her parents; four brothers: Matthias, Leonard, Francis and Nicholas Schramer; one sister, Barbara Hahn; three sisters-in-law: Loretta Schramer, Mary Schramer and, Sue Schramer; and five brothers-in-law: Patrick Hahn, Maurice Umbdenstock, Louis Schmitt, Bill Brummel and Dennis Lexa.
