Dorothy Struckman, age 88, of Elgin, passed into the arms of her Savior, while surrounded by the love and prayers of her family, on September 14, 2017, at Rosewood Care Center, Elgin, where had recently made her home. She was born on April 21, 1929, in Elgin, the daughter of proud parents Lee and Margaret (Lieving) Butts. Dorothy grew up on the family farm in Virgil, IL. While tending to her chores, she also attended local schools. Dorothy was a cheerleader, helping to build enthusiasm on the hard wood, cheering on the basketball team before graduating from Burlington High School with the class of 1947. She was a student at the Northern Illinois State Teachers College for a time before finding work at the Elgin Watch Factory. George Struckman as introduced to the prettiest girl he had ever seen in Dorothy. Thanks to an introduction from Don Miller, his fate was sealed. They walked hand in hand down the aisle on May 1, 1954 at the Lily Lake Congregational Church. They began their new life in Elgin where she returned to her farming roots as she worked side by side George tending the fields and caring for a host of animals over the years. Their they were blessed with a daughter, Susan, in 1957. Though Dorothy and George would “retire” from farming following a house fire, they moved back to town and their they stayed for eight years. In 1965, they moved to a home on Highland Avenue and made a lifetime of memories. Dorothy continued to honor her farming heritage by becoming a secretary for the Kane County 4-H program for many years. Dorothy was queen of the kitchen and specialized in chocolate chip cookies, fudge and Christmas candy. All the men on the farm looked forward to every meal she placed on the table and no one ever left hungry. She is survived by her loving daughter, Susan Struckman; two siblings: Donna Vee Bower and Joe (Donna) Butts; numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a family of friends who will miss her dearly. She is preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Margaret Butts; her husband, George Struckman; One sister Nancy (Butch) Bower; sisters-in law: Lucille Klieser, Marion Van Dusen, and Margaret Carey. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. with a memorial service to follow at 4 p.m. on Saturday, October 14, 2017 at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn, IL 60119. Private family interment will follow at a later date.
