Elaine Morris, age 84, of Sugar Grove, IL, passed away peacefully at her home, surrounded by the love and prayers of her family, Monday evening, December 18, 2017.
She was born on September 7, 1933, to proud parents, Floyd and Inez (Schuler) Read in Lily Lake, IL.
She grew up in Lily Lake for a time and attended local schools. Later the family moved to Little Rock, IL where she graduated from Plano High School with the class of 1951. Before receiving her diploma, Elaine made a name for herself in the school band, playing the flute.
That same year she attended the Sandwich Fair with Ernie Morris. It happened to be her birthday and Ernie’s gift was a proposal in marriage! They were united in marriage that same year, October 6, 1951 at English Congregational Church in Big Rock, IL.
They made their home in Aurora for a short time, but as soon as possible, began farming and moved to Little Rock in March of 1952. Seven years later they moved to the present family farm in 1959. Together, Ernie and Elaine farmed the land, raised a family of six children, saw thirteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren join the family circle that included many others who called the farm “home” and knew Ernie and Elaine as “mom and dad”.
Elaine was a faithful member of the English Congregational Church where she served in the Ladies Circle, Willing Workers, was a former pianist for the church and for both the Junior and Senior church choirs. She also was a member of a Ladies Aid group in Plano, following her mother’s community service footsteps.
Before her children were born, Elaine raised the three children of her best friend, who tragically died in an auto accident. Instrumental in their upbringing, alongside their father, she established the type of heart and the amount of love that Elaine could give. Later, it was her own children that grew to know and love all the wonderful ways she cared for each and every one of them. That love extended to their friends and other neighborhood kids, all of whom never shied away from calling her “mom” as well. Elaine and Ernie traveled to Alaska, Hawaii and an untold number of summer road trips across the lower 48. They also loved to square dance in the Sandwich and Hinckley Squares for many years. She collected salt and pepper shakers, bells, dolls, and more. According to the family, “if they collected dust, Elaine collected them”. Elaine always said she was the luckiest woman alive for marrying Ernie, and now they are reunited again, free to answer the Caller and square dance their way across the Heavens.
She is survived by six children: Daniel (Pat) Morris, Diana Nack, Donna (Jesse) Morris, Doug (Yvonne) Morris, Tara (Todd) Kubicki and Tiffany Morris; thirteen grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, including Ken Cradduck, and a countryside full of friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Floyd and Inez Read and her husband, Ernie Morris.
