GEORGE L. HOHMANN Sr.Age 83 of Batavia, passed away Sunday, November 18, 2007 at Delnor Community Hospital, Geneva where he was taken Friday afternoon, following a sudden illness at home. BORN / EARLY YEARSHe was born August 21, 1924 in Chicago, the son of William Preston and Mae Amelia (Overgaard) Hohmann. When he was still a baby, his family came to the Elburn-Big Rock area where they farmed for a number of years. Following graduation from Big Rock high school, George joined his family in farming. The love of his life came through the kitchen door at harvest time as a young woman helping cook for the threshing crew. In part, it may have been George’s Harley motorcycle, or his fancy footwork on roller skates but by 1946 there was a wedding in the works and George was united in holy matrimony to Rose "Polly" Lorenz on October 29th at St. Gall Church, Elburn. They made their home in Sugar Grove for a short time before moving to Wasco until 1956 when they moved to Aurora, finally settling in Batavia in 1958. In the early years George was a salesman for Moorman’s Feed Company until 1963 when he began working for Campbell Industries in North Aurora. When the company moved to Virginia, George worked part-time nights for Sears and days at the Walker Process Company, Aurora. Ironically, those jobs not only made a living, they made a life for George as he met life-long friends who would one day become his children’s in-laws. George retired in 1989 in order to care for his aging parents and, along that journey, George and Polly became grandparents themselves. For them, being grandparents was the joy of their lives. George was the kind of grandpa who could also be your very best friend; the kind that would let his granddaughters "fix-up" his hair and teach his grandsons to be award winning plowmen at the Big Rock Plow Match. One of his last acts was to plow his son’s garden this fall Though George left the farm as a young man, his love of farming never left his blood. In addition his years of working at the Big Rock Plow Match, George worked with his son Lee (George Jr.) on the Lyon Farm, a Kendall County Historical Society project where George was always in charge of roasting chestnuts at the Christmas Party.
