Gloretta “Glo” Lay, age 91, of DeKalb, formerly of Maple Park, IL, passed away quietly and peacefully in the early morning hours of Sunday, August 22, 2021, surrounded by the love and prayers of her family.

She was born July 28, 1930 in Harrodsburg, KY, to proud and loving parents, Oscar and Ovie (Logue) Davis.

Glo grew up in Harrodsburg and attended local schools. Following graduation from high school, she caught the eye of a special gentlemen.

In 1944 Glo met the love of her life, Christopher Lay, when her sister married Chris’ brother.  Before long the two were united in marriage on March 16, 1948, in Harrodsburg, KY. They would spend the next 64 years by each other’s side.

In 1957, they made their big move to the Elburn and Maple Park area where they made memories galore surrounded by their family. Glo found work at Richwrap, Richardson Electronics and as a waitress at Partner’s Inn.

Glo’s recipe book contained recipes for everything on God’s green earth. It didn’t matter what Chris brought home from a hunt, she was ready. Her famous cornbread stuffing could never be duplicated, and her beans and potatoes always meant going for seconds. Every Labor Day you could find her in the stands and cheering loud, her sweet southern accent echoing over the basepaths. Special cards were sent not just over the holidays, and often they included bingo scratch off tickets. She was a mean card player, especially when it came to Spades and an avid Bingo player. Wii bowling was at the top of her list even into her last years, no one could stop her swinging for strikes. Now reunited with her husband Chris, Glo will live on in the hearts of all who loved her.

She is survived by her son-in-law, Dennis Wogen; daughter-in-law, Cathy Lay; 11 grandchildren: Victor Wogen, Christi Wogen, Doug Wogen, Lynette (Ryker) Johnson, Seth (Lisa) Wogen, Larry Jr. (Jeanne) Lay, Alysia McCoy; Christopher (Irish) Lay, Ovie Vences, Matthew (Danielle) Lay, Andrea (Mike) Prusak; 26 great grandchildren; 10 great-great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and a host of friends across the countryside.

She is preceded by her parents, Oscar and Ovie Davis; her husband Christopher Lay; three children: Peggy Wogen, Larry Lay, Rick Lay; one daughter-in-law Ursula Lay; and one granddaughter, Patricia Lay.
