NAME Guenther Fred Hartung, age 77, of Genoa, formerly of Janesville, WI, passed away Sunday evening, October 22, 2006 at Kindred Hospital, Sycamore, due to complications following a stroke in June.BORN: He was born December 3, 1928 in Chicago, IL. EARLY YEARS : At age two, Fred went with his family back to Germany in 1930 and spent the rest of his childhood near Hamburg. EDUCATION: Following graduation in 1945 he alone made the journey back to the United States and lived with a family in New York who took him in until he made enough money to make the final journey to Chicago where his extended family resided.MILITARY: It wasn’t long after he arrived in Chicago that he enlisted in the United States Army in 1950, but not before he was united in marriage to Gertrude Dvorak on December 5th. Fred served his country in Korea until his honorable discharge in 1954. He returned to his wife and growing family and settled in Lombard, IL. MARRIAGE Following his divorce from Gertrude, Fred remarried Betty Jane Avery in 1976 and they made a home together in Janesville, WI. Fred continued to live in Janesville following Betty’s passing in 1997 until moving in with his son’s family in Genoa, IL in 2005. OCCUPATION / WORK HISTORY Fred worked for a number of companies over the years and included International Harvester, Lockheed, and Allied Trucking Co.MEMBERSHIPS Fred was a member of the VFW, Post # 5979, in River Grove as well as the American Legion, Post #76 in Wheaton.LIFE NOTES He was an avid fisherman, taking many trips to Canada, Minnesota, and Wisconsin to fish for anything that would bite. Fred also was a model train enthusiast and a devout believer in the Green Bay Packers with his patron saint Brett Favre at the helm. He was a meticulous gardener and took special care of his tomatoes and zucchini over the years. Overall, Fred loved to have fun with anyone at anytime and his good nature and spirit were passed on to all he met. SURVIVORS He now leaves his children: Brigitte (Michael) Besinger of Glendale Heights, IL and her family:Michael Olsen of Lombard, IL and, Tammy (Jeff) Schneider of Cary, IL;Gary (Dee) Hartung of Genoa, IL and their family:Daniel Hartung and his daughter Alexis of Montgomery, IL and Jason Hartung of Sandwich, IL; Monica (Terry) McCrea of Glendale Heights and their family:Mandy (Dave) Ratner of Hanover Park and their children Madison, Kylie, and Brynn;Jill McCrea of Bartlet, IL;Dana McCrea of Carol Stream and her daughter Paige;Gerry (Kim) Hartung of Lombard and their family:Shelley Hartung of Lombard and her daughter Bryanna,Jeremy Hartung of Lombard, IL, and Nick Hartung of Lyons, IL;Two step-sons:Mike (Nikki) Grady of Riverdale GA, and Thomas (Lynn) Grady of Hoffman Estates, IL;Many nieces, nephews and a family of friends. PRECEDED He now joins his parents and one brother who preceded him in death. VISITATION / FUNERAL The family will host a memorial service to be held on Saturday October 28, 2006 at 10:00AM at the Lutheran Church of the Master, 580 N. Kuhn Rd., Carl Stream, Il.
