Helen Louise McConnaughay, age 94, of St. Charles, formerly of Batavia, followed the hand of her Savior in spirit, as she had all her life in person, Thursday, May 7, 2015. The world is a poorer place without her, but the Heavens are richer as another angel has found their way home. She was born August 25, 1920, in Bluford, IL, the daughter of John and Florence (Helberg) McConnaughay. Helen attended a one-room country school house through her first eight years until 1934 when the family moved to St. Charles, where she went on to graduate from St. Charles High School with the class of 1938. Following graduation, Helen was employed at Mooseheart for a time as a secretary for the Supreme Lodge. In 1963, she began working as a secretary and bookkeeper for Averil Electric in Geneva, IL. Like many jobs, her work there entailed much more than the standard job description explained. Helen was the quintessential Mother Hen, occasional babysitter and guardian angel to a sometimes wild and independent band of electricians. When the store closed in 1988, Helen retired to other employment and began working in the office at the Riverain Point in Batavia. She also served as a volunteer with Fox Valley Hospice for several years. Her lifelong ministry, however, was being Aunt Helen to several generations of nieces, nephews, their spouses, their friends and anyone else lucky enough to meet her, even only if it was once. Her door was always open, as was her heart, and many are those who entered there and came away comforted, fed and strengthened. She was a member of the Global Mission Church of St. Charles. She is survived by her two siblings: Lucille Cindy Cornell and Norvin McConnaughay;Sister-in-law, Marilyn McConnaughay and a host of nieces, nephews, their families and many friends. She is preceded in de ath by her parents, John and Florence McConnaughay; One sister, Marie (Bob) Chase; Four brothers: Harold (Wilma) McConnaughay, Lloyd (Gladys) McConnaughay, Stanley (Betty) McConnaughay and David McConnaughay; One additional sister-in-law, Ernie Lee McConnaughay and brother-in-law, Jerry Cornell. Visitation will be at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn, IL, on Tuesday, May 12, 2015, from 5-7 p.m., followed by a funeral service to celebrate her life and faith. Interment will follow Wednesday, May13, at 11 a.m. at Union Cemetery, St. Charles, IL. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Helen’s name. Checks may be made to the "Helen McConnaughay Memorial" and mailed in care of P.O. Box 66, Elburn, IL 60119. Tributes may also forwarded to the same address or on www.conleycare.com.
