Jeannette L. Hartman, age 97, of Sugar Grove, passed away into the arms of her Savior, Wednesday, June 21, 2017.
She was born at home in Rockford, IL, the only the child Ferdinand and Ella “Nellie” (Windette) Paustian.
Jeannette grew up in Rockford until she was sixth grade before family moved to a farm in Monroe Center.
She graduated in 1938 from Monroe Center High School as one of 13. Every year there was a class reunion, with 74 in all as of this this year. During high school Jeannette sang in several contests. After graduation she worked on the farm, tending the cattle and pigs. Later she began working for St. Anthony’s Hospital in Rockford in the admitting office for about 8 yrs. She spent two years working for the telephone answering exchange before being promoted to manager. Jeannette retired in 1950 but worked part time for a doctor doing his bookkeeping for ten years while the kids were growing.
Jeannette met Ervin Horn through mutual friends. They were married in 1950, making their home in Lindenwood, IL. They were blessed with three children before his sudden passing in 1953. Jeannette was lucky in love twice when she met Deverl Hartman in Bristol, where Jeannette was visiting her aunt and uncle. Deverl had also recently lost his spouse and had four children of his own. After meeting at church, a friendship began that only got stronger through correspondence. That summer they met again and before long they were married on November 24, 1955 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Rockford.
They made their start in a 3 bedroom home with one bathroom for seven children in Sugar Grove.
Jeannette was an active member in many community clubs including an infamous card club, a local young adults group, the Rockford chapter of the Eastern Star, not to mention many years of faithful dedication to the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church.
She is survived by five children: Bill (Ruth Anne) Hartman, Beverly (Gary) Mershon, Bill Horn, Ceryl (Bob) Benson and Cheryl (Duane) Andrews; 19 grandchildren and more great-grandchildren, not to mention great-great grandchildren than you can count, in addition to a close family of treasured friends over the years.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Deverl Hartman: two daughters: Ruth Ann Nelson and Ervina “Bena” Horn; one daughter-in-law Pat Horn, and three grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 10:30 to noon, Wednesday, June 28, 2017, at the Sugar Grove United Methodist Church, 176 S. Main St., Sugar Grove, IL. A funeral service to celebrate her faith will follow at noon. Rev. Richard Mayer will officiate with interment to follow at Sugar Grove Cemetery, Merrill Rd., Sugar Grove, IL.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the “Sugar Grove Methodist Church” or the “American Cancer Society” and mailed in care of P.O. Box 66, Elburn, 60119.
