Mark Tompkinson

Mark “Ted” Tompkinson, age 63, of Montgomery, IL, claimed the promise of his Savior, on Valentine’s Day, February 14, 2018, surrounded by the love and prayers of his family. A man who had the biggest heart that beat for his family and who fought valiantly against the cancer that plagued him, found eternal rest on the day dedicated to love.
He was born on January 30, 1956 in Chicago, IL, to proud parents, Gordon and Patricia (Brennan) Tompkinson.
Mark, also known as Ted by his family and friends, grew up in Hillside, IL, before the family moved to Glen Ellyn. He graduated from Glenbard South High School with the class of 1974. Before receiving his diploma, Ted made a name for himself in track but outside school, he excelled in nearly any sport he put his mind to. Every summer, the family descended on Lake Delavan and the boys and their friends attacked the summer like it was to be their last.
Ted found his first major job at Wescom where he worked in production and Debbie worked in the photo department. Neither of them thought much of each other until they accompanied a friend on a double date. It was then that their love story began and it was “picture perfect”.
Their two souls became one, when they were united in marriage September 30, 1978 at St. James Apostle Church in Glen Ellyn, IL. They began their new life together in Woodridge on Janes Avenue. It was a humble beginning but their foundation was strong. It was there that they welcomed their daughter Sara. Shortly after being blessed with a son, Mark, the family moved to Montgomery where they made over thirty years of memories.
He was a faithful member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Oswego for many years.
His home was his castle where he ruled supreme. There was no project he couldn’t conquer, even if he had to read and do research before going to battle. Custom made cabinets, floors, plumbing and more, were no match for Ted and his tools. He often said that there was no reason to pay anyone for something you could do yourself. He even pulled apart his whole car to replace a $5 part. He was confident he could put it back together, and he did…with only two screws left over. His cars were always clean, pristine and polished and if you were lucky, he’d take care of yours too! Ted gave all he had to those he loved and would show up at all hours, anytime you were in need. He loved his family with abandon and no one was more important than his grandchildren. He was a great husband and father, but “Papa” spoiled his grandkids mercilessly and loved every minute of it. They called him “better than FedEx” because if they asked him for anything, it would be bought and delivered before you could blink twice. He was a knight in shining armor to his family and the legacy of his deeds will be unmatched. There was no one like Ted, and there will never be, but his memory will live on forever.
He is survived by his loving wife of forty years, Debbie Tompkinson; two children: Sara (Shawn) McGady and Mark (Megan) Tompkinson; two grandchildren: Maddie and Ellie; his mother, Patricia Tompkinson; three brothers: Gordon (Barb) Tompkinson, Brian (Suanne) Tompkinson and Bruce Tompkinson; aunt and uncle, Mickey and Peggy Brennan; many nieces, nephews, cousins and family of friends that will miss him dearly.
He is preceded in death by his father Gordon, an aunt and uncle, Jim and Mary Jane Peterson and his cousin, Jim and Sue Peterson.
A memorial Mass will be held at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, 551 Boulder Hill Pass, Oswego, IL 60543, at 10 a.m., Saturday, February 23, 2019. Interment will follow at Risen Lord Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in Ted’s name to benefit Misericordia. Checks may be made to the “Mark Tompkinson Memorial” and mailed in care of P.O. Box 66, Elburn, 60119.
