Mary L. Robinson, age 89 of Elburn went to be with her Lord at home on Friday, December 16, 2016.
She was born to the parents of William and Elizabeth “Bessie” (Flenniken) Hubbartt on Friday, September 8, 1927 in Tower Hill, IL.
Mary spent the first few years of her life in a small south central Illinois town called Tower Hill. In the 1930’s the family moved to Wedron, IL so Mary’s father could work at the Chicago Silica Sand Company. Mary attended local schools and graduated from Serena High School in 1945. After graduation she attended Northern Illinois University in DeKalb and majored in home economics and education. Mary graduated from NIU in 1949 with a Bachelors Degree. Years later Mary felt the calling to further her education and received her Masters Degree in Education from Northern Illinois University in Special Education.
While attending NIU Mary was invited by her friends to a Christmas party in Norway, IL. Little did she know this party was also a blind date. The young man whom Mary was there to meet would become her beloved husband W. Kent and they were united in marriage on August 20, 1949 at the Wedron United Methodist Church.
The newlyweds made their home in Rock Falls, IL where they both taught school before moving to Somonauk. In 1954 they moved to Rockford, where Kent became principal of Lincoln Park Jr. High School. In 1956 they moved to Waterman. By this time Kent had been named the superintendent of schools and Mary would put teaching on the back burner while she raised her two sons, Rocky and Perry. They left Waterman in 1964 and moved to Harvard, IL and thereafter moved to the Elburn area in 1967. A year later Mary was moved to continue her passion for teaching. While her husband served as principal of Kaneland High School, Mary became a special education teacher at Franklin Junior High School in Aurora. After retiring Mary was called many times as a visiting instructor at Aurora University and NIU in their Special Education Programs.
Mary was a very active member of the Kaneville United Methodist Church.
Learning from her mother, Mary became an accomplished cook she absolutely loved to cook and bake; particularly for others. While in college Mary wanted to earn some extra money, one day she noticed a flyer had been posted from a doctor and his wife. They were looking for part-time child care and a cook. Without much training besides what Mary learned from her mother, she took the job for the family of Dr. Howard Spafford. She became a lifelong friend with the Spafford’s and their children. As Mary became more comfortable with her skills as a cook she decided to start a small catering business out of the university’s kitchen. Mary has always enjoyed making meals for church luncheons or for people in need, but nothing beat her pies. It didn’t matter what flavor the pie was, the truth was in her crusts. Mary had that special touch to take her crusts to the next level.
Taking care of people in need was Mary’s lifelong passion. If she wasn’t a special education teacher, she was volunteering at food shelters, ringing the bell for the Salvation Army or working at the Redbird Mission Camp for the Methodist church in Beverly, Kentucky.
She is survived by her two children; Kent W. “Rocky” (Deborah) Robinson, and Perry (Sarah) Robinson, and 3 grandchildren; Haley Robinson, Jordan Robinson and Duncan Robinson.
Mary now joins her parents, husband, four brothers; Herbert Hubbartt, Jerry Hubbartt, Donald Hubbartt, Harland “Lefty” Hubbartt and two Sisters; Doris Castner and Marjorie Hubbartt.
