Mary M. Tierney, age 69, of Bradenton, FL, formerly of Maple Park, passed away Monday, November 9, 2015, at University of Chicago Hospitals, following complications from heart surgery. She leaves a legacy of love and memories for the family to cherish.
She was born October 22, 1946, in Libertyville, IL, the daughter of Anthony and Una (Wiser) Wegener.
Mary grew up in Maple Park on the family farm and attended local schools. She graduated with the class of 1965 from Kaneland High School.
Mary met her future husband in the halls of her alma mater. Mike Tierney not only walked the halls with Mary, but walked her down the aisle as well when they were united in marriage on September 23, 1967.
They began their new life together back in her home town of Maple Park before calling Elburn home for a time. Maple Park called to them once again until 2010 when they fled the winters to make their permanent home in Bradenton, FL.
Following graduation, Mary worked for a Chicago Title Company in Sycamore, IL. Later she spent time in the banking industry before handling all of the office details as a secretary for the family business, Tierney Drywall in 1993. Although declining health led her to retirement in 2008, Mary filled her time caring for her family. She and Mike then relocated to a home in Bradenton, FL, where they continued to make thousands of memories with friends and family alike.
Mary was a fantastic fan of the Chicago White Sox and the Green Bay Packers. She also was a collector of many things and enjoyed her time working in her garden. Mary loved to watch the local birds as they came to stay and go as the seasons changed. You could find no better partner to walk a beach and search for seashells that would eventually turn into one-of-a-kind lamps. Her mind was sharp and was kept strong by working on puzzles of every variety. In her early years, her hands kept busy with crocheting and needlepoint. Above all, Mary was a loving wife, mother and grandmother to her family, who will remember her forever.
She is survived by her loving husband Mike Tierney of 48 years; Two children: Kevin Tierney and Kelly (Jason) White; Four grandchildren: Kathleen White, Nicholas White, Michael Tierney and Steven Tierney; Four siblings: Donald (Jean) and David (Gerta) Wegener, Doris (Rich) Hall and Susie Knodle; One daughter-in-law, Susan Tierney; Many nieces, nephews and a community of friends both here and in Florida.
She is preceded in death by her parents; Four brothers Kenneth, Bernie, Daniel and Tony Wegener.
In lieu flowers, a memorial has been established in Mary’s name to benefit her favorite charities. Checks may be made to the “Mary Tierney Memorial” and mailed in care of P.O. Box 66, Elburn, 60119.
