Charles L. Barr Jr, passed away in the early morning hours of Saturday, February 22, 2020, surrounded by the love and prayers of his family.
After graduation from Glenbard High School, Chuck began studying at Kenyon College but when war was declared, he left to serve his country by enlisting in the U.S. Navy in November of 1943.He was honorably discharged in June of 1946 and completed his Bachelors of Arts Degree at Kenyon College, graduating in 1948.
Chuck, who was previously married and blessed with five children, was introduced by a mutual friend to Margo Winston, who had three children from a previous marriage. They were united in marriage on June 5, 1982.
In 1958, after leaving Upjohn where he worked as a pharmaceutical salesman, Chuck started Barr Vending Company. He also provided industrial food service for plants. At one time, the Barr Vending Company was considered the largest independently owned vending company in the greater Chicagoland area. After 30 successful years at the helm, Chuck sold the business in 1988.
Chuck was for six years, on the board of trustees at Kenyon College in Ohio. Chuck, who was an avid and accomplished golfer, was a 50 year member of St. Charles Country Club. In addition, he was a director for the DuPage Bank and Trust Company.
He was always a “perfect gentleman” and possessed the kindest heart. Despite his business success, Chuck stayed humble and lived for the love of his family.
He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife, Margo, his loving and devoted brother Roderick (Barbara) Barr; his children: Julie Barr (Mickey Duda), Lynn Barr and her husband Doug Hawkins, Charles L. Barr III and his wife, Dr. Margaret McMahon, Bruce (Ailyn) Barr and Grant (Autumn) Barr; Margo’s children: Michael, David and Mary Kilcrece; 12 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; several nieces, nephews and a host of faithful friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his devoted twin sister, Charlene Chalberg.
A memorial celebration of his life will be hosted by his family at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 320 Franklin St., Geneva, at 1 p.m., Saturday, February 29, 2020. Arrangements handled with care by Conley Funeral Home.
