Clifford “Cliff” Johnson, age 103, of DeKalb, passed away quietly, slipping from his earthly chains to claim the promise of his Savior.
He was born January 6, 1916, in DeKalb, to proud parents, Edward and Bessie (Holland) Johnson.
Cliff grew up in Maple Park and attended local schools. He graduated from Maple Park Community High School with the class 1934.
He was united in marriage to Ruth Burton. Their two hearts became one on August 5, 1939. In 1943, Cliff answered the call of his country and served in the United States Army during WWII, returning home in 1946.
Cliff was employed as a salesman for Kane County Services Company in Elburn for 12 years. He also worked for over 26 years for Investors Diversified Services-American Express as a financial planner and District Manager. He put down his pen and planner at the age of 73, retiring in 1989.
Cliff and Ruth were very involved in their community and continued the trend when they moved to Elburn in 1966. He was the longest living member of the Elburn Lions Club, having joined January 1, 1953, and served on the park board and was a fixture at every Elburn Days. Cliff was also a member of the Elburn Masonic Lodge #359. Together with Ruth, Cliff was a member and served as a moderator for the Elburn Community Congregational Church. The Kaneland School Board also counted him as a member and recognized him as the Chairman for three years.
When he wasn’t working, Cliff enjoyed time in his garden, working with tools, and spending time on the links of his favorite golf course. He and Ruth also made a lifetime of memories during their various and extensive travel.
He is survived by his son, Roger (Kathie) Johnson; one son-in-law, Dan Gilmore; three grandchildren: Kevin Gilmore, Mark (Alicia Barber) Johnson, Kristi (Beau) Bradley; seven great-grandchildren: Jessica King, Chantel King, Jerome Johnson, Avery Bradley, Adrienne Bradley, Tyler Gilmore, Laurel Johnson and one great-great granddaughter, Anessa Lawrence.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Bessie; his wife Ruth; two siblings, Lois Johnson and Art Johnson; his daughter Carol Gilmore and one granddaughter Michelle Gilmore
A memorial visitation will be from 5-7 p.m., Friday, November 29. 2019, at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn. A memorial service will follow visitation at 7 p.m. Private family interment will follow at a later date.
