David Gordon Haidle, like his namesake, was a man after God’s own heart. He died unexpectedly on August 28 doing what he loved best. Throughout his life he had an incredible impact on the lives of many as a committed husband, father, son, brother and friend. Dave’s sense of humor, humility, and passion for serving others shone through in everything he did.
Dave was born in Oak Park in 1949 and graduated from St. Charles H.S. in 1967. He enlisted in the Army and served in Vietnam in the 183rd Aviation Company. Upon returning, he met and fell in love with Kathy, his beloved wife of 46 years. They married in 1972 and have been inseparable best friends ever since.
Dave had a passion for the underdog and the “least” among us. He was active in prison ministry for decades and frequently visited Angola, the Louisiana State Penitentiary, to visit the “church behind the walls.” He mentored young men after incarceration and taught fathering classes at jails and prisons across the country.
A skilled builder and carpenter, Dave worked at Wheaton College for 31 years and upon retiring he formed a nonprofit called A Roof Over Your Head. He spent his retirement building wheelchair ramps, and fixing roofs for what he called “POWS”: prisoners, orphans, widows and soldiers.
Dave was also an ordained minister and he served as an Elder and Pastor at Village Bible Church for many years. He and Kathy mentored young couples through marriage counseling and their friendship. Dave was also honored to serve as chaplain for his Army unit and he has performed weddings and funerals for countless families he befriended along the way.
Dave’s heart was as big as his smile. He will be sorely missed, but his family has peace that Dave is now finally with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
He is survived by his wife Kathy Haidle; two children, Paul Haidle and Kristen Haidle; two sisters: Linda (Richard) Telling and Lois Lundgren; in-laws, Bonnie Haidle, Pat Brawner, Bob (Kay) Nolan, and Barbara (Bob) Ramsey; many nieces, nephews, cousins and an untold number of friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Ralph and Phyllis Haidle, one brother, Timothy Haidle; two brothers-in-law, Tom Lundgren and Neal Brawner.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at 11:00 am at Village Bible Church, located at the corner of Rt. 47 and Bliss Rd. in Sugar Grove, IL. Private family burial services have already been held.
