HARLING, age 84, of Maple Park, passed away in the early morning hours of Tuesday, January 04, 2011, at Bethany Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in DeKalb where she had recently made her home. BORN: She was born April 17, 1926, in DeKalb, IL, the daughter of Nick and Mildred Janich.EARLY YEARS:Eleanor grew up in DeKalb attended local schools. She graduated with the class of 1945 from DeKalb High School. MARRIAGE: Eleanor met Allan Harling following his return from WWII in 1948. They met at a local roller rink which was appropriate as a whirlwind courtship followed and months later they were married at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in DeKalb. RESIDENTIAL HISTORY: They made their home in Maple Park and spent the next forty-nine years making memories and raising a family together. Eleanor continued to make her home following Allan’s passing in 1997 until declining health brought her into the care of first, an assisted living facility in Shabonna, and later she became a part of the Bethany Healthcare family in DeKalb. MEMBERSHIPS: Eleanor devoted her life to the care of her husband and family but she also had a special place in her heart for the Legion Wives, a part of the Maple Park American Legion Post 312. She was a faithful member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church of Maple Park and for many years was in charge of funeral luncheons in addition to her position on the Cenacle Guild. LIFE NOTES: Eleanor read cookbooks like others would read magazines. Her skills in the kitchen were unrivaled, skills that she later passed onto her children and grandchildren. She also had a penchant for bingo and the occasion trip to "the boat" to try her luck on the slot machines. In earlier years, Eleanor and Allan went on cruises and traveled extensively with friends throughout the United States. Eleanor was also know to kick up heels at The Blue Moon on Saturday nights. She never lost the rhythm and was tapping her toes to music long after she had to hang up her dancing shoes. SURVIVORS: She is survived by three children;Carol (Stan) Schumacher of Sugar Grove, IL, John (Debra) Harling of Maple Park, IL and Michael Harling of Southern Illinois;Six grandchildren:Suzeahn (Travis) Hunt and their children, Danielle and Dylan, Deidra Harling, Colt (Jennifer) Harling and their children, Morgan and Miranda, Kindra Schumacher, Kristin Schumacher and Shawn Harling;Many nieces, nephews, cousins and a family of friends. PRECEDED:She is preceded in death by her husband Allan, her parents, three sisters: Francis Dujmovich, Katherine Graham, and Mary Meyer; two brothers, Joe and Louis Japunich. VISITATION / FUNERAL Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m., Friday, January 7, 2011 at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn, IL, 60119. A mass to celebrate her life will begin at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 8, 2011, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, Maple Park. Fr. Joachim Tyrtania, pastor of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in McHenry, IL, will officiate and interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery, DeKalb, IL.MEMORIAL In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in her name to benefit her favorite charities.
