Elizabeth Johnson

Elizabeth D. Johnson 97 years young, and a life-long resident of St. Charles, passed away peacefully at Delnor Community Hospital, Geneva, IL, Friday, February 06, 2009. BORN / EARLY YEARSShe was born at home, February 13, 1911 in Batavia, IL, the daughter of Emil and Louise (Jenson) Jensen. Though early years were spent in Batavia, her family later moved to St. Charles where she graduated from St. Charles High School with the class of 1929. With the dawning of the Great Depression, Elizabeth took any job anywhere but kept busy. Eventually, she was fortunate enough to land a job with the Illinois Department of Personnel in Chicago. It was there that she met her husband, Harry Johnson. MARRIAGE & FAMILYA whirlwind romance began at the Aragon Ballroom and concluded at the altar, shortly before Pearl Harbor. Though Harry was soon drafted, an unexpected medical discharge sent him home, just prior to "D-Day." He and Elizabeth made their home with her parents for a time and, a few years later, built a new home just two blocks away. In the mean time, Harry had been attending Northwestern University, Chicago and following graduation, began working for Hawthorne Electric, Chicago. In 1955, Elizabeth and Harry adopted their first son, Randy, and three years later, adopted a second son, Norman. When they boys were young, Elizabeth was active with them in both Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. Together, the four of them were a close family who also enjoyed spending time with their many relatives who lived throughout the area. Elizabeth was also a life-long member of the St. Charles Congregational Church where, at one time or another, she was continuously active through the years on every committee and function of the church. Following Harry’s retirement, he and Elizabeth began to travel. Elizabeth had the kind of personality and attitude toward life that allowed her to easily make herself "at-home" with any group in any place in the world. Following Harry’s death in 1995, Elizabeth never looked back, but kept "living forward" and continued to enjoy travels far and wide with family and friends. Her indomitable spirit and unbridled sense of humor remained vibrant to her last days. Her legacy will live in the laughter that will forever echo in the hearts of those she loved.
