Eugene “Gene” A. Lemons, age 85, of Aurora, formerly of Orland Park, IL, passed away surrounded by the love and prayers of his family, Thursday, November 14, 2019.
He was born February 10, 1934, in Pine Bluff, AR, to proud parents, Frank and Alma (Branch) Lemons.
Gene grew up in Pine Bluff and attended local schools. His work ethic was built early and grew often as he worked since age 10, helping to support his family. Gene graduated from Pine Bluff High School and made a name for himself on the football field. He was even awarded a college scholarship to Tennessee Tech, but had to turn it down so he could continue supporting his mother and five brothers.
Gene worked locally before enlisting in the United States Airforce in 1954, serving his country faithfully until his honorable discharge in 1957. Not only did he get training and pay through the Air Force, he gained a beautiful wife, Beverly Weiher, who worked as a hostess at the U.S.O. in Chicago. After a whirlwind courtship, they walked down the aisle, on August 19, 1955. They made their home in Orland Park, IL, raising two children and making enough memories to last a lifetime.
Gene spent many years behind the wheel of his big rig, driving truck for Certified Grocers, never having one accident in over 40 years. Rumors have it, over a million miles flew by before his retirement in 1989.
Gene was loved fishing with his brothers and was the biggest Arkansas Razorback fan you will ever meet. Woodworking, rock collector often taking vacations where he could dig to his hearts content, coming back with a treasure trove of finds, including gemstones that which themselves combined in beautiful pieces of jewelry.
Bears and a fairweather Chicago baseball fan. Loved animals many who found a place in his heart and home.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly Lemons; One son, Ross (Shelley) Lemons and their son R.J.; One brother, James (Helen) Lemons; several nieces, nephews and a family of friends.
He is preceded by his parents, four brothers: Jerry, Jesse, Elbert and Mack Lemons; one son James “Jimmy” Lemons; and one sister-in-law, Diana Weiher.
