NAME Gladys E. Heuertz, age 94 of St. Charles, passed away at her home, surrounded by the love of her family, on Thursday, October 23, 2008. BORN: She was born on August 15, 1914, the daughter of Julian and Agnes Miller in Cloverdale, IL. EARLY YEARS :Gladys grew up on the family farm in Cloverdale and attended local schools. After school she continued to work on the family farm tending to the livestock and working the fields. MARRIAGE Gladys was involved the local church choir and it was there that she met her future husband. Gladys and Adolph were united in marriage on November 28, 1940. They began their new life together renting a farm and working the land together as she did as a girl before moving to St. Charles in 1952. Farming would continue to be a familiar refrain as they continued to farm when they moved to Wasco in 1963. In 1974 they moved once more to a homestead elsewhere in Wasco where they have since made their home. Later Gladys worked at Little Traveler in Geneva for a time as well as Wasco Nursery.MEMBERSHIPS Gladys was a faithful member of St. Patrick’s Church, St. Charles for many years. LIFE NOTES Gladys had a strong work ethic and even stronger faith. Her love for her family had no bounds but heaven help you if you didn’t take off your hat at the table or forget to say grace before eating. Flowers were a lifetime passion with Mums, geraniums and African Violets among her favorites. Her green thumb grew unto installing her own green house off the kitchen and outside was home to a well stocked garden. Along with her flowers, colorful ceramic birds perched in different places throughout the home and helped keep her company. She also loved to sew repairs into clothes that had been worn through and there was never a card game she didn’t like. She and Adolph would play with their friends on Saturday night. Whether it was canasta, gin, rummy, bridge, euchre or crazy eights, there wasn’t a game she couldn’t play. Later in life she found joy feeding the cardinals that fed by the window, working on puzzles and read romance novels cover to cover. All these memories and more are the legacy she leaves behind to live on in the hearts and minds of her family and friends.
