HELEN M. LAWSONage 84, of Maple Park, IL, passed away, March 2, 2007 at the Jennings Terrace Care Center, Aurora, IL. She was born November 10, 1922 in Maple Park, the daughter of William and Elizabeth (McCabe) Sanders, Sr. She attended Maple Park schools and grew up to marry her childhood sweetheart, Lloyd C. "Ike" Lawson. When Lloyd came home from WWII in 1944, they were wed at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Maple Park. For a short time, they lived in McCook, NE where their first son, Thomas was born while his father finished his enlistment. Returning to Maple Park they lived on the "north side of the tracks" for some years before building a new home on the "south side of the tracks" where they joined their good friends the Koenigs and the Campbells. After high school, Helen had attended business school in Aurora and put her skills to work at the Smith Chemical Company in Maple Park. Later working for Wurlitzer Mfg. in DeKalb, her attention to detail earned her the job of secretary to the president. Helen loved her work and when she "retired" she found new places and ways to share her secretarial skills at Northern Illinois University, Arthur Anderson, Dreyer Clinic and Flinn Scientific. Never one to be idle, she found many ways to serve her church and community. A life long member of St. Mary of the Assumption Church, she was active in the Cenacle Guild and the St. Vincent DePaul Society and, for many years, played the church’s beautiful pipe organ. Her grandchildren remember going to church to hear grandma practice as well as pray, regularly. Helen was a Legion Wife at the Maple Park American Legion Post and helped organize many festivities in Maple Park. Her hands were always busy cooking, baking, crocheting or doing something for someone. Following Ike’s death in 1973, Helen enjoyed many travels around the world from Australia to Rome, Hawaii and many more. She also made sure that she took her grandchildren with her on special trips like Disney World. Always kind hearted, giving and caring, her life wove a legacy of love, faith and caring into the lives of her family and friends.
