NAME Hettie Virginia Myers, age 91, of Valparaiso, passed away on August 18, 2007 at Porter Hospital in Valparaiso.BORN / EARLY YEARSShe was born on a farm west of Kaneville, IL, June 6, 1916, the daughter of Richard and Beatrice Cowherd where she would become the oldest of six children. EDUCATIONHettie grew up in Kaneville where she attended Kaneville High School. MARRIAGE & FAMILYShe was united in marriage to Clarence "C.C." Myers in 1937. They began their new life together in St. Charles where C.C. managed and Hettie did the books for three Phillips 66 service stations over the next thirty-five years. Following C.C.’s passing in 1977, she moved to DeKalb near her older brother for a number of years. Hettie then made her home in Columbia City, IN, to be near her son and eventually followed him to her present home in Valparaiso. OCCUPATION / WORK HISTORY Throughout the years Hettie also worked full time in various area factories. When her time working at the factories came to a close, her independent spirit and fortitude strengthened by her work ethic made it possible for her to clean houses into her eighties. LIFE NOTES Hettie hailed from a long line of hard workers who showed their love and appreciation by doing things for others. Sewing was a special talent that Hettie honed over the years and she continued to keep her hands busy into her last days at the nursing home. She also loved to garden and would toil for hours on end in her flower beds. MEMBERSHIPSShe was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Valparaiso, Royal Neighbors, and Rebekah Lodge.SURVIVORS She now leaves her son James Robert (Kathy) Myers of Valparaiso;One stepson Charles (Mary) Myers of Illinois;Five siblings:James Cowherd of Wyoming, William (Jean) Cowherd of Texas, Anna Sarver of Illinois, Edith Geske of Illinois and Mary Zessman of Nevada;Two grandchildren, four great grandchildren and a family of friends.PRECEDED She now joins her parents and loving husband, Clarence who preceded her in death. A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn, IL, Thursday, August 23, 2007, at 10:30 a.m. Rev. Jason Turner, pastor of the Kaneville United Methodist Church, will officiate.
