JOSEPHINE MAE (Sandberg) THIELEAge 75 of St. Charles, passed away Saturday evening, December 9, 2006 at Provena Pine View, St. Charles. She fought a long, hard and brave battle with cancer; a battle that made loved ones proud; a battle that was true to her faith and the determination that defined her entire life.BORN / EARLY YEARSShe was born May 5, 1931 in Geneva, IL, the daughter of Joseph and Aleda (Anderson) Sandberg. Following high school, she was employed for a time at Furnas Electric and Carney’s Bakery where she loved serving the public. It was good training for even better times that would come later in life. MARRIAGE & FAMILYIn 1957 Josephine was united in marriage to Harold Thiele and they made their home in Missouri, near Sedalia where their daughter, Beverly Mae was born. Two years later, Josephine and Harold went their separate ways and Josephine returned to the Fox Valley with Beverly and they made their home in Batavia. Josephine became a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Batavia where she later started a singles group that shared many trips and good times and even some wonderful weddings among its members. In the early 80’s, following the deaths of her parents, Josephine moved to Geneva where she became an active member of the Geneva Lutheran Church. In 1987, her daughter, Beverly and husband Mark, were blessed with a son, Sean, who became the love of her life. Sean was just two when Josephine began working at Polly and Charlie’s, a yogurt and pastry shop on State Street. The sweet treats she served her grandson earned her the nic-name "Grandma Yogurt". It was a nic-name that stood the test of time. Even Sean’s dog, "Snowball", a petite Bichon Frise, knew her by that name!In the fall of 1999, Josephine moved to St. Charles, where she made many friends at Carroll Tower. More recently, as failing health called for greater care, Josephine moved to the Pine View Care Center, St. Charles. As days dwindled to a precious few, this quiet promise keeper held on for her beloved grandson to return from college. Hours later, she would go "home" as well.FAMILY MEMBERSShe is survived by her loving daughter, Beverly and son-in-law, Mark Foley; And her pride and joy grandson, Sean all of St. Charles, One sister in-law, Phyllis Sandberg of Elburn, ILSeveral cousins and a family of dear friends.PRECEDED She is preceded in death by her patents, Joseph and Aleda Sandberg and one brother, Almer Sandberg.MEMORIAL A memorial will be established in Josephine’s name to benefit the Geneva Lutheran Church and the American Cancer Society.
