LEONA M. CHRISTENSEN, age 93 , of Elburn, IL, passed away peacefully, Sunday, April 4, 2004 at Rosewood Care Center, St. Charles, where she recently became a patient.Leona was born March 14, 1911, at Aurora, IL, the daughter of Michael and Catherine (Beck) Jungels. From the age of five, she grew up at Bald Mound where she attended the Bald Mound School until the eighth grade when she went on to attend Batavia High School.As a young woman, she worked for a short time at Campana Corporation, Batavia and in the office of the Household Journal Magazine. In 1930, she met Lester F. Christensen at a local barn dance. Three years later, on May 20, 1933, Leona and Lester were united in marriage at Holy Cross Church in Batavia.They made their home at Bald Mound with Leona’s parents, so that Leona could care for her mother while Lester worked, for a time, as a carpenter for her father. In time they became a part of the area farming community and in 1968, moved to town and made their home on Nebraska Street in Elburn, where Leona has continued to live until March of this year. The last of her generation, Leona is survived by two sisters-in-law, Sadie Irwin of Seneca, IL and Loretta Christensen of Maple Park, IL, a number of nieces and nephews and a close family of friends who have given their loving support over the years.She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Lester and one sister, Roxann, in infancy.Memorials in her name may be made in her name and mailed to P.O. Box 66, Elburn, IL.
Visitation will be held 10-11a.m. at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn on April 7, 2004 with a funeral service to follow at 11 a.m.
Interment will follow at Gardner Cemetery in Maple Park.
