Linus “Len” Heine, age 80, of Sugar Grove, formerly of Batavia, IL and Hartland, WI passed away at home in the presence of his loving family on Tuesday, July 26, 2016.
He was born April 28, 1936, in Freeport, MN, the son of John and Margaret (Gesperlin) Heine.
Len grew up in Freeport, MN and attended local schools.
Following graduation from Melrose High School in 1954, Len attended St. John’s College for a year before answering the call of his country. He enlisted in the United States Army and served alongside his brothers-in-arms as an MP in Korea before returning home to civilian life.
Following his honorable discharge, Len continued his schooling at St. Cloud State University, Len graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting in 1960.
Len had the luck of the Irish when he met his future bride, Patricia Detjen, on St. Patrick’s Day 1963. Who knew that chance meeting would lead to over 50 years of marriage beginning a scant eight months later on December 28, 1963.
They began their new life together in Milwaukee, WI, where they welcomed home a son, Thomas in November of 1964. Three more children followed after a move to St. Louis, MO: David in 1966, Craig in 1967 and Ann made the family complete in 1970. The growing family then moved to Hartland, WI, in 1973. In 1984, Batavia, IL became home but they finally settled in Sugar Grove in 2000.
Len worked for Travelers Insurance, now Citigroup, as an auditor first and later as a manager. 1994 brought his retirement but also more time on the links and winters in Tucson, AZ. Greece was a favorite destination as was Alaska, Maritime Islands, Peru and many visits to see David in San Diego, Tom in New Mexico, Craig in New Hampshire and weekly visits with Ann and her husband Tony in Sugar Grove. Family trips came around every five years and Len was in charge of all the details. Memories were made with every mile as they traveled to Green Lake, WI, Breckinridge, CO, and Smith Lake in Virginia to name a few.
Len loved sports and never missed a game on television, especially golf on Sunday. He was a proud Packer Fan after his marriage to Pat, he really had no other choice, and attended many Packer Games at Lambeau Field with his father-in-law, Dutch. Len had a reputation as a very fit man, a reputation he bolstered by hiking trails all over the U.S. and abroad as well as going to the gym with Pat five days a week. That didn’t preclude him from enjoying a Sunday Brandy Manhattan or two to cap off the weekend. He loved to work on the yard but his best times were spend in the company of his family, especially his grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Pat Heine; Four children: Thomas Heine, Dave (Megan) Heine and their children, Carver and Peyton; Craig Heine and Ann (Tony) Cobb; One sister, Bernice Heine; two nieces, 3 nephews, and a family of friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, John and Margaret Heine and two siblings: Patricia Mirocha and Mike Heine.
Following cremation, there will be a private family service.
The family asks in lieu of contributions, that you perform an act of kindness in memory of Len’s kind nature. Tributes may be forwarded through the Conley Funeral Home Facebook Page and you can see his full life story at www.conleycare.com.
