Marilyn M. Mechtel, age 89, of St. Charles, passed away peacefully with the love and prayers of her family on Tuesday, October 30, 2018. Marilyn was born in Chicago, IL, on November 5, 1928, to proud parents Harold and Marie Farland. While growing, Marilyn attended local schools and was very active in her church and church choir. During the summers, she went to Lake Geneva with her aunts, cousins, and other relatives, and enjoyed her extended family. She graduated from high school and immediately went to Wright Junior College to follow her dreams of becoming an art teacher. At Wright Junior College, Marilyn met the man who would become her husband. Raymond Mechtel painted a picture of love that was so beautiful, she said yes. After a short courtship, Raymond and Marilyn united in marriage on April 1, 1950. They started their new life together and lived in various parts of the Chicagoland area. After some time, they moved to Franklin Park where they began to raise their family. They were blessed with three children: Gail, Gary, and Diane. In 1964, they moved to Wheaton and from there in 1973, made their final home in St. Charles. Marilyn worked for her husband at Ray’s Signs where she was the office manager and delivered signs to various local businesses on Wednesdays. She was an active member of the Grace Lutheran Church of Lily Lake where she sang in their choir, helped in the office, and sometimes she went on road trips with the Roadrunners group. At home, Marilyn was a laid back person with many hobbies. She liked to ride the family horses and raised Kerry Blue Terriers. While outside tending to the horses, she also was a gardener, raising vegetables, and planted many flowers of all kinds. Along with making her yard beautiful, the flowers she planted were made into arrangements for flower competitions at the Kane County Fair. When she was not outside, Marilyn read books of all kinds and painted. She was a one of a kind local artist and sometimes sold her pieces. In retirement, Marilyn and Raymond traveled to visit extended family and attended educational elder hostiles. She will be greatly missed, but will always remain in the hearts of the people she met. Marilyn is survived by her three children: Gail Frey, Gary (Deborah) Mechtel, and Diane Hansel; five grandchildren: Dan and Chris Frey, Samantha and Erika Hansel, Erik Mechtel; one great-granddaughter, Danielle Frey and a great-grandson, Konner Frey; several nieces and nephews and a family of friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Marie Farland; her loving husband of 58 years, Raymond Mechtel; and one sister, Carol Pekarik. Visitation will be on Monday, November 5, 2018, from 4-8 pm at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn, IL.
