Max Sauber

Max Thomas Sauber, age 19, of Sycamore, passed away unexpectedly, Wednesday, July 25, 2018.
Max was born in Sycamore, IL, on December 16, 1998, to proud parents, Thomas and Patricia (Berger) Sauber. He was always happy and loved Lego’s, Halo building sets, and wearing anything that could remotely resemble a hat. He was sweet, quiet, and soft spoken unless he wanted something. From a young age, he had the vocabulary of an English scholar. Often describing things as ferocious or victorious. All of his brothers were given a nickname of food from their Granny, (Sweetie Pie, Pickle Puss, Porkchop). Max wanted one too, so he called himself, “Snickers”. He loved being at the lake playing for hours in the water.
Max attended Sycamore High School and graduated in 2017. After graduation, he attended Milwaukee School of Engineering. He loved physics but not engineering, and came to the conclusion that he wanted to be a teacher. He was planning on attending Aurora University in the fall.
Max loved to read, play video games, and Anime. He was notorious for falling asleep in the car after getting only blocks from home. Max was a night owl, playing online games with friends until the wee hours of the morning; but he was known to fall asleep when he was playing, his online friends hearing him snore through the mic. He enjoyed going to the movies with family and friends. He was an avid reader and perfected the art of walking his dog and reading on his phone at the same time.
He was often unsure of new experiences, but with a little push would come around easily and enjoy himself. However, you could always count on him to try a new, foreign food. He loved learning about foreign cultures (especially Asiatic) and was quite interested in how others around the world lived. He was a curious person with particular interests in the old trades like smithing and glass-blowing.
Max was generally a quiet person and was hard to pry open, but when you did it was a can you didn’t expect. Max could challenge anyone into a smile with his wicked sense of humor and zinging comeback lines. He had a good heart, was selfless, and would do anything for the ones he loved. Max was accepting of everyone for who they were, without judgment.
Max’s life was filled with love and laughter, but deep down there was a shadow, an illness, that darkened his days. This shadow prevented him from seeing all the love and support from the ones who meant the most to him in this world. In one moment, he lost sight of the shore, and in desperation, ended any hope for a future. That one moment does not diminish all that he was. His legacy is the life, love, and unforgettable memories made with all those who were lucky to have loved and known him. Max will never be forgotten and will always be loved.
Max is survived by his loving parents, Tom and Patti Sauber; three brothers: Cody, Garrett and Sam; his grandma, Sylvia Berger; his beloved dogs, Atlas and Rue; a cherished best friend, Xavi Gilesman; countless aunts, uncles and cousins.
He is preceded in death by his grandparents, Chuck and Lorraine Sauber and Donald Berger.
A Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 244 Waterman St., Sycamore, IL 60178, at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, July 31, 2018.
