At the age of 85 and surrounded by family, Raymond Arthur Wood passed away Monday, December 26, 2016 at Sherman Hospital in Elgin, IL. He is preceded in death by his parents and 3 siblings as well as his wife Barbara (Andersen)Wood. He leaves behind 4 daughters: Debra Slater, Rita Gayman, Susan Metz, and Kristen Johnson, and 8 grandchildren: Amy and Heather Slater; Charlotte, Jarod, Eric, and William Metz; and Logan and Jordan Johnson.

The 3rd of 4 children, Raymond was born on February 24, 1931 in St. Louis, MO to Perry and Charlotte (Robison) Wood. As a baby he and his family moved to Chicago where he attended school in the Logan Square neighborhood and graduated from Stimetz High School in 1949. Two years later Ray enlisted in the U.S. Air Force and served as an airplane mechanic and ultimately Staff Sergeant during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in 1955. Ray later dedicated over 30 years to his career with Fischer Industries in Geneva, IL as a supervisor. He retired in 1998.

On June 25, 1966, Ray married the love of his life, Barbara Andersen. They raised their family in Villa Park, IL for 11 years before moving to St. Charles, IL where they lived for 26 years. After their children were grown, Ray and Barb settled into their Maple Park, IL home in 2003 for their quiet retirement and grandchildren spoiling years. Ray lost his loving wife in 2011 after her 3 year battle with leukemia.

He saved his words for when they mattered; Ray Wood was a quiet man with a heart of gold. A soft touch, a sweet smile, and a loving hug were never held back. Ray’s warm blue eyes and dry sense of humor will dearly be missed.

Private family interment will follow at a later date.

A gathering of family and friends will be from 9:00-11:30am, Saturday, February 18, 2016 at the Conley Funeral Home in Elburn.
