Robert Scot Garlick, age 52, of Sugar Grove, IL, and formerly of River Grove and South Elgin IL, passed away unexpectedly, Wednesday, January 27, 2016.
He was born January 10, 1964 in Elk Grove Village, IL, the son of Clair and Sally Garlick.
Robert grew up in River Grove, IL, and attended local schools. He was a fixture in the halls of his high school where he won a science award before graduating with the class of 1982.
Following graduation Robert worked for United Airlines and Flying Tigers Cargo during which time he obtained his pilot’s license and then flew cargo planes. He also attended DeVry University on a part time basis and earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Electronics Engineering Technology
Upon graduation from DeVry, Robert was employed at AT&T, and later at Lucent Technologies (now Alcatel Lucent), where he worked until 2013. He then founded his own company and became President and Chief Architect of Lynx Network Services.
Robert was united in marriage to Cynthia Nelson in 1989. Though they would eventually go their separate ways, Robert and Cynthia were blessed with three sons; Brandon Scot, Justin Ryan and Derek Kyle. Later, fate would bring him love once again when he met Jamie Frusolone. They were united in marriage in 2004. The family grew by two when Robert and Jamie welcomed Jacob Scot and Elaine Nicole
After living for more than 30 years in River Grove, in 1996 Robert relocated to South Elgin, and then in 2005 to Sugar Grove, where he continued to make memories with family and friends.

Robert had an engineer’s mind and heart. If you wanted anything, he could build it. He was gifted with extreme intelligence and the ability to quickly analyze a situation and immediately know the path to take. The “natural born teacher” in his personality brought out his often-repeated basic philosophy of “Everything follows a pattern. Always look for the pattern.” He loved nothing more than passing his knowledge onto his children and others. He also loved helping others and was the one who was frequently called upon to help solve a problem and provide the guidance to accomplishing the solution. Robert loved his family and was blessed with five children. He was proud of all of them and loved each one dearly. Each of them is different and each of them held a special place in his heart. He loved spending time with his children working on personal projects as well those for school. When it came to the Science Fair, Robert went to nearly every student (when they didn’t come straight to him) and lent a helping hand. He very much enjoyed teaching local seniors the wonders of the internet, making sure they not only safely establish a connection, but they could also navigate to their hearts content. Even though he left the “friendly skies”, aviation was still a passion. Weather was also a topic he couldn’t get enough of, whether it was terrestrial in nature, or space weather phenomenon. He was even a registered weather spotter, calling in reports of local weather. He was fascinated with history and was an aficionado of The History Channel and all of its mystery. A “Grill Master”, Robert was never happier than lording over his kingdom and passing on his wisdom to all his children. Robert’s heart was full of love and always had room for another friend, many of which were of the four-legged variety. He was a great teacher and had a knack for being able to take the most complicated issues, ideas or projects, and explain them in plain language that everyone could relate and understand, (especially when you gave him an Expo marker and a white board.) The big and little screen called to Robert as well. Netflix binges, movies on demand and trips to the theater, complete with all the trimmings, provided an opportunity to bond with his children, family and friends. Robert’s life was filled with love and laughter, but deep inside there was a shadow that began to grow. It would eventually darken his life and prevented him from recognizing all the love and support he had from family and friends. In one moment, he lost sight of the shore, and in desperation, ended any hope for a future. That one moment, though dark, doesn’t diminish all that he was. His legacy is the life, love and unforgettable memories made with all those who were lucky enough to have loved him and known him. Robert touched many lives in many ways. He will never be forgotten.
Robert is survived by his loving wife Jamie; Five children: Brandon, Justin, Derek, Jacob and Elaine Garlick; a special Aunt Lois Garrick Smith, a community of friends and a house full of pets.
He is preceded in death by his parents and best friend/ second father, Don Jahnke.
