Sandra “Sandy” Jean Meyers, age 80, of Maple Park, IL., passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of Friday, April 22, 2016.

She was born on July 21, 1935, in St. Charles, IL, the daughter of James and Viola (Tierney) McKnight.

Sandy grew up in Ladysmith, WI, where she attended local schools. She graduated with the class of 1953 from Ladysmith High School. Before leaving her alma mater, she played saxophone in the band and played on the basketball team. Sandy moved to the Minneapolis area where she found employment at a family physicians’ office.

It was during this time, Sandy met David Meyers and not only caught his eye, but promptly stole his heart as well. Following a whirlwind courtship, they were united in marriage on September 10, 1955.

They began their new life together in Ladysmith and welcomed home a daughter, Kimberley, a year later before moving to Aurora, IL, where Jim made their family complete. After 40 years of memories, David and Sandy moved to Maple Park in 2001. Sandy lost her soulmate in 2012, but continued to make memories in Maple Park, surrounded by family and friends, laughter and love.

Throughout the years, Sandy wore many “hats”, including hairdresser after attending Aurora Barber College, and she also was the manager of the cafeteria at the Waubonsie Valley High School for many years. Later she was co-owner and helped open Jailhouse Pizza and Pub in Aurora. Before retiring, Sandy spent several years as a medical receptionist at Dreyer Medical Clinic.

Sandy loved jigsaw puzzles and would spend hours making beautiful pictures emerge from piles of colored cardboard. She was an avid reader of hundreds and hundreds of books. To Kill A Mockingbird was among her favorites. Sandy was also a lover of animals. Anything that was furry and on four legs held a special place in her heart, right alongside her beloved Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Blackhawks. Sandy was queen of her kitchen and ruled with ultimate authority that was found in her famous Monster Cookies and Texas Sheet Cakes. From neighborhood children to her children’s friends and coworkers, everyone came running when they smelled her delicious treats. She and David were known to “cut the rug” at various halls across the countryside over the years. She also enjoyed cheering him on at countless baseball games. Her family always came first. Sandy was caring and selfless and was an awesome grandma. Summers were full of activities for her granddaughters and nights spent at her house turned into an event. They all piled in the same bed and the girls were treated with a special treat before bedtime, a Hershey’s Kiss. To know her was to love her and the friendships Sandy made lasted forever. Her indelible mark was left on everyone she met, from strangers at a mall to caregivers, her in her last days, she will never be forgotten.

She is survived by her two children: Kimberley Meyers and Jim (Cindy) Meyers; Two grandchildren: Alayna and Alicia Meyers; a sister-in-law, Carol McKnight; several nieces, nephews and God-children, and a community of friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband David; one brother Jimmie McKnight, and a brother-in-law, Dan Meyers.
