Thomas “Tom” Ostrom, age 53, of Aurora, passed away, Saturday, October 6, 2018, surrounded by the love and prayers of his family.
He was born January 29, 1965, in Oakbrook, IL, to proud parents, Walter and Betty (Hunter) Ostrom.
Tom grew up all over the United States and attended local schools wherever the family lived. Although most places less than a year, they eventually landed in Lily Lake.
Tom’s sister was nice enough to introduce him to the love of his life. Tina Maxstadt stole his heart but gave hers in return. They exchanged vows on July 13, 1985 at S.S. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. They began their new life together in Glendale Heights and Carol Stream but settled in Aurora.
After high school, Tom began working at American Engines before working as a mechanic for Snow Brothers. A little more than ten years later, Tom picked up his tools and began working for Illini Power. After seventeen years, his declining health brought him to retirement in 2011.
Tom’s first love was his family and especially his granddaughter. He enjoyed racing and never missed a NASCAR event, but when the checkered flag was waved, Tom could be found outside. He loved the outdoors and kept busy fishing, camping and feeding his “friends” in the backyard. They called him the “male snow white”, because of his affinity for birds and how they flocked to his presence looking for food and attention. At first sight, Tom was an imposing and sometimes scary figure until you found out that inside, he was just a big teddy bear that only looked like a mean linebacker. His friendships were as strong as oak, and although he may not always agree with you, his support was unshakeable. His faith was his bedrock and the foundation ran deep. It was with that faith that he stared down the obstacles that came onto his path and overcame each and every one of them until he claimed the promise of his savior.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Tina Ostrom; three children: Stephanie (Melissa) Fine, Sarah Ostrom and Christopher (Betty) Ostrom; One special granddaughter that was the apple of Tom’s eye, Emalyn Fine; his parents, Walter and Betty Ostrom; one sister, Terrie (Roger) Wery; several nieces, nephews and a family of friends who all will miss him dearly.
He is preceded in death by his brother, Todd Ostrom and his paternal grandmother, Edna Ostrom.
