WAYNE A. STRAHL Age 65 of Elburn, IL, passed away Saturday, November 15, 2008 at Delnor Community Hospital, Geneva after a courageous battle with infection.BORN / EARLY YEARSHe was born December 14, 1942 in Chicago, IL, the son of Walter W. and LaVerne A. (Gutknecht) Strahl. Following graduation from Kelly High School Wayne began working part-time at Western Electric and was pursuing studies at I.I.T (Illinois Institute of Technology) when he was called to serve his country during the Viet Nam War. On returning home, he picked up where he left off at I.I.T. and returned to Western Electric where he met Barbara Orlow. MARRIAGE & FAMILYOn April 28, 1974 Wayne and Barbara were wed at St. Philippus in Chicago. They soon bought a home in Downers Grove where they lived for ten years before moving to Elburn in 1987. Wayne designed the home for Barbara but the back yard was designed around his short-wave tower and his Ham radio hobby. Retiring from Lucent Technologies after some thirty-five years, that hobby got more attention as did the vacation trips he and Barbara enjoyed. Although they traveled from Alaska to Hawaii, Australia and New Zealand, Wayne’s "travels" by radio, made friends across several continents including Asia and South America. An untold number of friends will miss hearing from W9II.MEMBERSHIPSWayne was a member of the "Hamsters" Ham Radio Association and long time fan of the White Sox and the Bears. A quiet man with firm convictions, Wayne also had a great sense of humor. It was a combination of those traits that helped him maintain a positive attitude through many health battles, especially in recent months.
