WILBUR C. VELDHUIZENAge 85 of Woodstock, IL, passed away Friday evening, November 28, 2008 at the Centegra Medical Center, Woodstock, IL, where he was taken following a sudden illness. BORN / EARLY YEARSHe was born August 18, 1923 in Oak Park, the son of Gysbertus "Bert" and Bertha (Schultz) Veldhuizen. His parents farmed in the Wasco area near Burlington road for a time before moving to the Bloomingdale area. Wilbur followed his father’s footsteps into dairy farming and farmed in both Kane and McHenry counties for many years. LIFE NOTES Wilbur loved life and he loved farming. In the world of farm machinery, he also loved and collected "anything orange". His Allis Chalmers tractors were his pride and joy and he proudly joined countless others in the annual, three-day heritage tractor parade. In his retirement he transported his grandchildren’s 4-H animals to fairs and 4-H competitions far and wide and this stubborn, Dutch dairyman even learned to love the goats raised by his grandchildren. Like many of his generation, Wilbur loved to dance and joined friends from far and wide for many great evenings. Wilbur was not only light on his feet – he was fast and agile when he put on a pair of roller skates. MEMBERSHIPSHe was a life long member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, the Pure Milk Association (AMPI) andthe McHenry County Farm Bureau. He was also a member of the United Church of Christ, Harmony, IL. SURVIVORS He is survived by his loving life companion, Vera Shoemaker;Four children: Donna ( Henry) Slawson of Castle Rock, CO, Dale Veldhuizen of Sycamore, ILVern (Alice) Veldhuizen of Richmond, IL andLisa (Steve) McCabe of Lakemoor, ILNine grandchildren and seventeen great grandchildren.One sister, Marilyn (Robert) Savage of Warsaw, IN;several nieces and nephews and other relatives. PRECEDED He is preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Harley and one granddaughter, Laura Thompson.VISITATION / FUNERAL His funeral service will be held Tuesday afternoon, December 3, 2008 at 3 pm with visitation to follow from 4-7pm at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn, IL. The Rev. Dr. Jeffrey Dire, pastor of the Community Church, Elburn, will officiate and interment will conclude on Wednesday at Elm Lawn Cemetery, Elmhurst, IL.
