Sandra Kaye (Thuestad) Petit, 71, of Sycamore, Illinois died December 6, 2021, at her home, into the arms of our Lord and Savior.

Sandy was born October 9, 1950, at St. Mary’s Hospital in DeKalb, the daughter of Orval and Norma Thuestad.  Sandy enjoyed growing up on the family farm in Creston.  A beagle, Queenie, was one of her cherished memories from on the farm. She graduated from Rochelle High School in 1968.  Sandy married Alan Petit on December 11, 1971, at First Lutheran Church in DeKalb, Illinois.

Sandy worked as a telephone operator at Contel and then as an administrative assistant for Northern Illinois University.

She was a member of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Virgil, Illinois.  She enjoyed golfing, knitting, and gardening. She was a master canner, jelly maker and donut maker. Sandy’s joy was her family and faith. Many days she would spend baking desserts to share with those she loved, playing with her grandkids, or praying the rosary.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Alan of Sycamore; her children, Tracy (Tom) Carlson, and Nicole (Paul) Marchese; six grandchildren: Morgan and Timothy Carlson, and Juliana, Joseph, Matthew and Melanie Marchese; her siblings, Roger (LaRonda) Thuestad, Jim (Betty) Thuestad, and Pris Thuestad.

A Mass to celebrate her faith will be held at 11 a.m., at S.S. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Virgil, on Friday, December 10. Interment will follow at S.S. 1. My condolences to the family for her loss. She will always be with each of you in the years ahead as she has left all of you with her lessons in life, instructions in how to bake, cook and knit, and how to care for one another.
I have so many fond memories of Sandy and I growing up and playing at each other’s houses. I feel blessed to have known such a sweet, loving, and talented individual who always put her family and friends first. She is going to be sorely missed. I am so glad that she is now in the arms of Jesus.
Hugs and prayers to all of you.

  3. Sandi was a strong woman with a big loving heart and lived her faith in an exemplary manner always sharing her time and talents with others. We all will miss her.

  4. I miss Sandy as when I first started at NIU, I worked for her and Thelma Hiland. They both were so nice to me. Sandy was always helpful, caring, hard working and would teach you anything she knew. She was a very faithful person. She loved her grandchildren. Sandy, you are missed.

  5. Sandy was a joy to work with. She had a perpetual smile on her face, silly sense of humor, compassionate heart, believed in the power of prayer, and she lit up when she talked about her family. I will look forward to seeing her again someday in paradise.

  6. My sincere condolences to Al, and the rest of the family. I enjoyed working with Sandy at Contel and visiting with her and Al at various functions. From time to time I recall when my wife and I ran into Sandy, Al, and the Sabin’s in Tombstone, AZ. Great visit and enjoyable time.

    Rest In Peace.

  7. Al: Sandy was such a special person. She truly made the world a better place, she will be deeply missed. Please accept my SINCERE SYMPATHY for the loss of your wife. (Hey, do you remember the SANTA suit she bought?)

  8. Sandy was really obsessed with passing on some of the Norwegian traditions when we talked on the phone before the holidays last year. We texted and e-mailed back and forth some lefse recipes that I had used and from our families. I suggested she tell you, Tracy and Nicole, that there are some good demonstrations on Y-Tube on how to make lefse if you ever want to try it. Our sympathy to the whole family.

  9. Back 20 years ago when I started at NIU I worked with Sandy on all kinds of projects. She taught me so much along with being one of the sweetest, most caring, individuals I have ever met. She had a huge heart and wore it on her sleeve as she was always genuine with her wisdom. I appreciate our time together and will always remember her warm smile. Love you, Sandy!
