Kahl, age 93, passed from this life to eternal life on May 29, 2012 at his home, surrounded by the love and prayers of his family. BORN: Glenn was born in Maple Park on May 18, 1919, the son of Foster Ray and Laura (Miller) Kahl.EARLY YEARS:Glenn attended local schools and graduated from Maple Park High School as President of the class of 1937. During his high school years, Glenn was busy shooting baskets and making a name for himself on the basketball court. He began farming at a young age.EDUCATION: Following high school, he continued to work for his dad on the farm until he enlisted in Army Air Corps just after Pearl Harbor in 1941. MILITARY: Glenn served proudly for four years, became a Master Sergeant, and spent the last year and a half serving in the European Theater before his honorable discharge in October of 1945. MARRIAGE: He returned to farm life upon his return from the service but found more than harvest waiting for him. Helen Dumdie caught not only his eye but his heart and from that very moment he knew that he’d marry her and she’d make him the happiest man alive, she just didn’t know it yet. Two weeks into their courtship, he slipped a ring on her finger and before the snows melted the following year they were married on February 2, 1946. RESIDENTIAL HISTORY: They began their new life together in the Maple Park area. While Helen was busy making their house a home, Glenn left the fields and opened a new repair shop, Kahl Appliance Sales and Service, through which he cared as much for his community as his community cared for him. He retired in 1982 but still kept busy as an avid woodworker, making custom furniture and frames for family and friends to proudly display in their homes. MEMBERSHIPS: Glenn wore many hats over the years as he worked and lived in town that he loved. He was captain of the Maple Park Merchants Basketball Team in the late 1930’s. He was elected to the Maple Park Village Board as Trustee in 1949 and later became Village President at the age 33 in 1952. During this time, he not only became Co-Chair of the Maple Park Centennial, but also won the Abe Lincoln Look-Alike Contest as well. A proud veteran, Glenn was a lifetime member of the Maple Park American Legion, Post # 312, where he was Post Commander and served as Chaplain for sixteen years. He was also a long time member of the Grace United Methodist Church since 1931 where he was Lay Leader for ten years, Trustee, Board Chairman and worked hard during all the numerous fund raising activities. Glenn was also instrumental in bringing about the East Room Addition in 1964. In 1966, he was appointed to serve as Supervisor of Virgil Township and thereby a member of the Kane County Board of Supervisors. He oversaw the township for fourteen and a half years before stepping down in the spring of 1981. During this time Glenn served on various other committees’ including the Chairman of Recorders Committee, and served as member of the Kane County Zoning Board of Appeals for over 20 years. He also was a volunteer fireman in Maple Park for many years and in 2004, Glenn held his highest office, that of "King" during Maple Park’s Sesquicentennial in 2004. LIFE NOTES: You could take a farmer out his fields but he’ll always remember the smell of the harvest. Glenn never forgot his farming heritage and was proud of his renowned talent of picking corn by hand and how quickly he could move down the rows with ease. His wit was quicker than most and his "one-liners" could really zing, bringing smiles all around. Glenn was a family man of the highest order. Of all his accomplishments, marrying his wife and raising a family of five children were the highlights of his life. Glenn will never be forgotten, nor will his last sentiments written for his family and friends, "Don’t grieve but celebrate the past."SURVIVORS: He is survived by his five children:Roger (Pat) Kahl, Dennis (Karen) Kahl, Carol (Ron) Williams, Allen (Mary) Kahl and Janet (Ken) Stoll;Eight grandchildren:Grant (Cindy) Kahl, Brandon (Dana) Kahl, Chris (Kim) Kahl, Tiffany (Lori Angstadt) Kahl,Heather (Bert) Veldhuizen,Addam Kahl,Nick (Loren) Kahl and Breanne Kahl;Eight great-grandchildren:Trevor Kahl, Kailyn Kahl, Brock Kahl, Mackenzie Kahl, Brooke Kahl, Peyton Kahl, Aidan Kahl, and Garrett Veldhuizen;One brother-in-law, Paul (Audrey) Dumdie, Many nieces, nephews, cousins, a special care giver, Krystyna Struzik and a countryside of friends. PRECEDED:He is preceded by his beloved wife, Helen A. Kahl, his parents, Ray and Laura Kahl, three sisters: Alice Schroyer, Dorothy McAdams and Lucille Johnson. VISITATION / FUNERAL A private family service and burial will be held at a later time. MEMORIAL In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established in his name to benefit the Maple Park American Legion, Post #312.
