Joseph W. “Joe” Sarna, age 76, of Campton Hills, IL, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, April 25, 2020 from complications of a heart attack.
He was born October 31, 1943 in Rockford, to proud parents William and Marjorie (Baldwin) Sarna.
Joe grew up in Rockford and attended local schools.
Fate stepped in early when Joe met the love of his life, Marjorie “Marge” Wilson when he worked as a baker at doughnut shop owned by his father. Marge held court at the register, waited on customers and more importantly, waited for Joe to catch her eye. That would start a lifelong love affair which led them down the aisle on February 22, 1966 in Rockton, IL. They began their new life in Rockford and were blessed with two sons, Philip and Neil.
Following high school, Joe worked for North States Oil Company at various gas stations. Eventually he became a partner of the Lombard location, so the family moved to Ahrens Court. In 1978 the family moved to Glendale Heights. Ten years later, in 1988, they moved once more, this time making a home in Elburn. In 2000, the family settled in Campton Township where they continued to laugh, love and make memories galore.
Joe loved his family with all his heart and never did a day pass without him telling Marge, he loved her. He was especially proud of his sons and grandsons, and the work ethic that he instilled in them. His laugh was infections and very unique. You never had to guess he was in a room filled with laughter. He loved being surrounded by family and friends but you knew when Joe was ready to go home, he would wave his finger in a circle in a “round it up” motion to get everyone on their way to the door. “The bus is pulling out..” was your last chance to grab your things and get moving. In later years he would remark on aging with the oft repeated quote, “The wheels are falling off the bus”, but he took everything in stride and drove through life with a smile on his face and love in his heart.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Marge Sarna; two sons: Philip (Celeste) Sarna and Neil Sarna; five grandsons: Joseph, Vincent, Nick, Kyle, and Alex Sarna; siblings: Vanessa Sarna and Bill (Chris) Sarna; many nieces, nephews and a family of friends.
He is preceded in death by his father, William (Tina) Sarna and his mother Marjorie (Al) Nordahl.
Private family services have been held. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
