HAROLD KIEFFERAge 90 of Elburn, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday evening, October 19, 2005 at Delnor Community Hospital, Geneva where he was taken following a sudden collapse at his home.BORN: EARLY YEARS : EDUCATIONHe was born August 20, 1915 in Mineral Point, WI the son of Albert and Margaret (Lawinger) Kieffer.Raised on the family farm he graduated from Mineral Point High School and went on to attend Marquette University in Milwaukee. Graduating with a degree in history, he taught for two years before being drafted into the Army. Harold was stationed briefly at Ft. Riley, Kansas before entering Officer Candidate School in Florida. Graduating as a lieutenant, he was stationed in Nashville and there married Veron Hesson January 25th, 1944. They moved on to Louisville, KY and later to San Antonio TX where Harold was discharged in ____ . Through the years he continued to serve in the National Guard, eventually rising to the rank of Lt. Colonel. Following the war, Harold put the "G.I. Bill" to work at the University of Iowa, Iowa City, where he earned his masters degree in physical education. For a short time, he taught in Clinton, IA but soon found an opening in Elmhurst, IL. He and Veron fell in love with the community and Harold took the job at York High School and joined the Elmhurst American Legion. For over twenty-seven years he taught physical education, coached baseball, football and community Little League, refereed just about every sport – and never missed a day of work. Retiring in 1974, he and Veron moved to Elburn where they have since made their home. A man of deep faith and firm principles, Harold was honest to a fault – even when it hurt him personally. It was a virtue that earned him great respect both on and off the field throughout his life. An avid sports fan he followed many teams and enjoyed the company of his sons-in-law on game day whether in front of the TV or at a stadium. SURVIVORS He is survived by his wife, VeronThree daughters:Valerie (James) Glazick of Bartlett, IL and their family: Lisa (Michael) Killough (and sons: Bennett and Preston);Stacie (Scott) Marhofke (And son, Aiden)Deborah Santeford of Fayetteville, AR and their family: Aaron (Margaret) Henry;Rachael (Chuck) Dennis (and daughter Mary Katherine)Connie (Paul) Salc of Downers Grove, IL and their family:Jenny (Scott) Bloom (and daughter Nicole);Kelly,Lindsay, and Brittany Salc.Two brothers:Bernard Kieffer of Mineral Point, WIRobert (Mary) Kieffer of Greenfield, WISeveral nieces and nephews.VISITATION / FUNERAL He was a member of St. Gall Church, Elburn, where his funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday afternoon, October 22, 2005, at 2 pm The Rev. Fr. Karl Ganss will officiate and interment will follow at St. Gall Cemetery, Elburn.
