Date of Death

LOYD MILLER, age 90, of Elburn, passed away at his home while being cared for by his family, Saturday, November 28, 2015, following complications from prostate cancer.

He was born on May 29, 1925, in Honey Grove, TX, the son of John and Maggie (Neely) Miller.

Loyd grew up in Honey Grove and attended local schools. When he was 14, the family moved to Forrest City, AR, where his dad found work.

Loyd heard the call of his country in 1943 and enlisted in the United States Navy. He served proudly alongside his brothers in arms in the Pacific Theater until his honorable discharge in 1945.

Upon returning to civilian life, Loyd had a whirlwind courtship that bloomed into 18 years of marriage. Eventually they went their separate way, but later, fate smiled upon Loyd once again when he met Leah Mjoen in the mid 1960’s. Loyd gave his heart and soul to Leah, and she did the same in return, as their two lives, and families, became one in March of 1969.

They began their new life together in Elburn, making unforgettable memories for the next fifty years.

Loyd worked at construction for many years.

Loyd was a proud member of Elburn American Legion as well as the Carpenters Union Local 839 for over 50 years.

Loyd never had any time for hobbies. His hands were rarely still for any amount of time, and were surely built for labor. He earned every nick, scar and callous that he collected over the years, telling the story of his work ethic and determination. Loyd and Leah’s combined family grew to include ten children, but the joy he found when he was surrounded by his children, and later, grandchildren and great-children, is immeasurable.

He is survived by his wife Leah; Nine children: Donna (Ron) Ahman, Loyd Jr. (Sharon) Miller, Sharon Slyh, Bruce (Brenda) Galauner, Michell Lovell, Debora (Marshall) Hilmes, Dwayne (Danielle) Miller, Donna (Tony) Harrington and Douglas (Sandra Jean) Mjoen; two sisters: Dorothy Pitchford and Ruby (Charles) Adamson; a sister-in-law, Genevieve Miller; a brother-in-law, Thomas (Wendy) Thompson; 26 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and a community of friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; three brothers: John D. Jr., James “Pee-Wee” and Billy Miller; two sisters: Moreen (Cliff) Thornton and Mary (Bill) Brown and her late husband Cletus Cross; Five children in infancy; one granddaughter, Rebecca Slyh; one step-son, Donald Mjoen and a brother-in-law, James Pitchford.

The family will host a memorial service on May 15, 2016, at 2 p.m., at the Community Congregational Church of Elburn, on the corner of Rt. 47 and Shannon St. Rev. Dr. Walter Thyng, pastor of the church, will officiate.
