Virginia L. Hoyt, long-time Elburn area resident, passed away on Friday, August 1, 2008 at the DeKalb Area Retirement Center – Oakcrest, at age 99. She was born on December 18, 1908 to Warren and Ida Landers in Bald Mound, Illinois . A lifelong resident of Illinois , she married Robert W. Hoyt of Elburn on June 21, 1934, and the couple made their home on the family farm southwest of Elburn until they retired from farming and moved to Elburn. Prior to her marriage Virginia attended what is now called Northern Illinois University where she earned both one- and two-year elementary teaching certificates. Following college she taught elementary school in Oak Park until her marriage. Since then she worked as a homemaker, but was involved in a number of community activities including various volunteer positions at Elburn’s Community Congregational Church. She was an accomplished pianist, spending many of her early years accompanying her father, Warren Landers, as he played violin for various dances and musical productions. Later she accompanied many church and community vocal ensembles. Virginia and Robert had one son, Robert Landers Hoyt, born in 1941. He married Jane Swannack in 1967, and in turn they had two daughters, Elizabeth Jane Hoyt born in 1970 and Ann Harrison Hoyt born in 1972. These two granddaughters were the joy of both Virginia and Robert’s lives, added to by the birth of their three great granddaughters. Virginia is survived by her son Robert (Jane) of Menomonie, Wisconsin; granddaughter Elizabeth (Reade) Griffith of London, England; granddaughter Ann Hoyt of New York City ; great-granddaughters Virginia "Gigi" Griffith, Louise "Lola" Griffith, and Eleanor "Poppy" Griffith – all of London ; an older sister Hazel Swanberg of Oakcrest; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert, her parents, an older sister Gertrude Knief, and a younger brother Wayne Landers.The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, checks be made payable to the Virginia Hoyt Memorial and mailed in to P.O. Box 66 , Elburn , IL 60119 , where gifts will be distributed to the Good Samaritan Fund of the DeKalb Area Retirement Center , Elburn Community Congregational Church, and other favorite charities. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 10, 2008 at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St. , Elburn. The Rev. Dr. Walter Thyng, friend and former pastor, will officiate. Visitation will be from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon at the funeral home.

Interment will follow at Blackberry Township Cemetery, Elburn, Il.
