JUNE V. O’MARA, age 94, of Batavia, formerly of Elkhart, IN, passed from this life to eternal life the morning of October 3, 2013 surrounded by the love and prayers of her family. She was born April 28, 1919 in Chicago Heights, IL. June grew up in Chicago Heights and attended local schools. She graduated with the class of 1937 and attended both Illinois Wesleyan College and University of Illinois where she majored English. While in college, June met a certain Naval Aviator returning home, Brendan O’Mara, who caught not only her eye, but eventually her heart as well. A whirlwind courtship ensued and before long, they were united in marriage less than a year later. June and Brendan began their new life together in Champaign before moving to Peoria for a time. Canton, IL, became their home. They lived in Joliet for a short time before settling in Ottawa, IL. In 1972 they traveled across state lines to their home in Elkhart, IN. After Brendan’s passing in 2006, June moved to live with her daughter in Batavia, IL. June was always busy raising her children, but never too busy to volunteer time at local animal shelters. She also spent many years working as a customer service representative in the pharmaceutical field. June was very active in the PTA as well as St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Elkhart, IN. She was also a den mother in the local Cub Scouts for a time. June lived a hard life coming from humble beginnings. Being brought up through the depression is what laid the foundation for who June became throughout her life. June spent much of her time as a mother, nurturing her growing brood of 6 children. She also spent much of her extra time with her bridge club or the mothers club Catholic Family Married Couples, where she served as President. June’s home always had an abundance of peppermints to be used for whatever ailment you had. In their retirement years, June and Brendan travelled throughout Europe and Asia and as far as Japan. During her 50’s, June learned how to ski and even tackled the trails in the Swiss Alps. Above all she was a mom who taught her children to love others and be good parents themselves. She always said she raised six "only" children and she was never happier than when she was surrounded by family. All the best qualities you could put together for a mom, she had them in spades. Although her family filled most of her heart, she still had enough room leftover to love her animals, especially her dogs. June always had a four legged friend by her side. Through the years the family hosted two students from overseas. When June’s children were growing up she would get them to bed early so she could get a jump on the latest popular novel. If you knew June, you always saw the warmth, kindness, and intelligence in her eyes. She is survived by six children:Mark C. (Nancy) O’Mara,Chris J. (Pamela) O’Mara, Patrice E. (John) Lence, Martin J. (Jackie) O’Mara, Alan G. O’Mara and Mary L. (Nick) Kacarab;Thirteen grandchildren;Five great-grandchildren;Many nieces, nephews, cousins and a family of friends. She is preceded in death by her husband Brendan, her parents and one brother, Gene Maier. Visitation will be held Saturday October 5, 2013 from 2-5pm at Conley Funeral Home, 116 W. Pierce St., Elburn. A funeral mass celebrating June’s life will be held at a later date in Indiana.A memorial has been established in June’s name to benefit the following charities: Elderday Center 328 W.
